Year 5 & 6 trip to Ingram Valley
During the last week in June the whole of Years 5 and 6 visited Ingram Valley as part of their topic about Northumberland. A fantastic time was had by all and the children behaved extremely well during their visit. The day began with a hill climb to the summit of Brough Law, from where the pupils sketched a variety of landscapes across the valley. Unfortunately the rains fell and we headed down the hill for an early lunch. After lunch the chuildren were set a task of creating a dam across the river in their groups. The pupils were judged on the quality of their dam and the standard of presentation. Some groups were slightly more focused on catching the local wildlife rather than brave the freezing temperatures - but after an hours building, the victorious teams were Mr Otterson's group and Ms Taylor's group. The children finished off with a plodge and play in the pools created by their dams - some even managed to submerge themselves fully just to show the quality of their dam building skills!

Netball Tournament
Year 5 and 6 pupils took part in a Netball tournament at Joseph Swan School on October 16th. Miss Mason and Mrs Rudge took 14 children to take part in a tournament against our local cluster schools. The children had attended several weeks of after school and lunch time sessions to improve their skills and it showed as they put on as fine display of netballing skills on the night. The teams came a very respectable 3rd and 4th overall against some high class opposition. Many thanks goes to the parents who helped out with lifts and of course to the fine coaching efforts of our staff.

Our chosen country was Spain! Viva Espana! Some of our children go on holiday to Spain and were interested in learning more about this country. There were three sessions on offer - Food Tasting with Miss Walker, Spanish Bull Fighting with Mrs Overman and Spanish Language with Mrs Barnes. During the previous week the children researched Spain on the internet and completed a quiz to prepare them for the day. It was lovely to see Spanish costumes worn by the children on the day.

It was a close run thing, but the overall winners of the event was OTTERS !!!!! Thank you to all the adults who helped out to make the event such a success.

Parent/Pupil Numeracy classes
As part of aiming to improve our links with parents and get more adults involved with their children's learning, Mr Otterson will be starting up some Numeracy sessions for parents and children to attend to help improve basic mathematic skills and learn some of the different ways in which maths can be taught today. The sessions are intended to be fun and concentrate on developing skills and learning ways in which to help the children when tackling homework and preparing them for SATs.
After consulting parents the most selected option was for Tuesday evenings straight after school from 3.30 til 4.30. The first session will therefore take place on Tuesday 18th November at 3.30. If you can't make this time slot then some different session times after Christmas will be on offer.
Hope to see you there
Mr Otterson

Supremes at the Shipley
A group of Year 5 and 6 pupils had a very exciting day at the Shipley Art Gallery, viewing the dresses worn by Mary Wilson of the Supremes, designing their own creations and enjoying modelling some fabulous dresses designed by fashion students in the style of the 60's and &70's. Back at school the children copied and designed some ideas of their own which can be seen in the Key Satge 2 corridor.
Termly update
It has been an exceedingly busy term in year 5 and 6 as usual. here are some of the highlights of the past few months.
Topics: The major focus for the term was World War II and evidence of the pupils fantastic work can be seen in classrooms and on display in the year 5/6 corridor. The pupils decided which areas of World War II they would like to concentrate on and prodcuced some lovely creative pieces of writing, artwork and technology based on the topic. There was also the obligatory trip to Eden Camp which proved a roaring success and provided the children with lots of ideas and questions for follow up work in the classrooms.
All 3 classes aslo carried put a plant study and leanred about the physiology of plants and how to look and care for them - some more successfully than others! Mr Otterson's class did a short topic on Earth and Space where the pupils prodcued some excellent projects based on the "big questions" they had based on the topic e.g. is there life on other planets? What is a Black Hole? and my personal favourite, Why are there so many things named after chocolate bars in space?
The phase has studied the artwork of several famous painters and artists, had opportunities to develop their cookery skills with Nik the Chef and continued their development of French skills with Mrs Shenton. Add to this the music workshops, Maths breakfast clubs, one to one teaching, electronics project with Emannuelle College and many more activities, it has been an action packed 13 weeks at school!
Remembrance Day
Sports update
This term has been a bit quieter than normal, partly due to the fact that the leisure centre has been closed and as a result several tournaments and festivals have been put on hold til later this year. We have had basketball and football tournaments this term in which the year 5 and 6 pupils have performed really well and look forward to the forthcoming hockey, netball and multiskills events in the next half term.
Christmas Quiz
The annual Christmas Quiz took place on the final morning of the Autumn term and proved a great success. It was a close run thing going right down to the final round, but eventuallly the Hedgehogs proved victorious despite the children being hindered by the performance of some of the staff on their team! Well done to all those who took part and a big round of applause to the winners.
