From 8th - 10th March, there are bonus Tesco for Schools vouchers in the Daily Mail. Each voucher is worth 3 times the amount of the normal Tesco vouchers. If you buy the Daily Mail, remember to cut out the vouchers & put them in the box in the Main Entrance.

Tesco vouchers

It must be almost Spring, as the Tesco voucher collection starts again next week! Vouchers will be in store from 1st March to 9th May. In the last 3 or 4 years we have received several thousand vouchers which we have used to buy computers, video cameras, computerised Lego. Please send your vouchers into school, there will be a box outside the offices.

Virtual Bike Race. Can we cycle around the UK?

As a Bike It school and as part of our commitment to encourage active travel to school, I’m delighted to announce that we will be taking part in the Sustrans Virtual Bike Race 2010, starting Monday 1 March.

Over 150 schools competed in last year’s virtual race around the world, generating over 130,000 cycle journeys to schools over a four-week period. This year we’re expecting over 450 schools to take part and hope you and your children will help generate even more cycle trips.
Each daily cycle journey made to school by a child, parent or teacher is awarded a set amount of kilometres, contributing to the school’s virtual journey around the UK. The more cycle trips we make, the quicker our school gets around the UK.

Dr Bike...free bike repairs at Glynwood

On Thursday 4th March Alan Barlow from BIke It will be running a Dr Bike session at Glynwood. The session will include free bike checks and repairs for the children’s bikes.

All you need to do is get your child to bring their bike to school and Alan will check them over. If there is a specific problem please can you attach a note to the bike detailing the nature of the problem so he can check it and make any necessary repairs.

Film Club, 25th January

This week's film is Bridge to Terabithia. It finishes at 4:55pm.
Bridge to Terabithia tells the story of Jesse Aarons and Leslie Burke, twelve-year-old neighbors who create a fictional world called Terabithia and spend their free time together in an abandoned tree house.

SCHOOL OPEN MONDAY 11TH JANUARY

School will be open as normal on Monday 11th January. However, be advised that all pathways are hazardous, so make sure you are wearing appropriate footwear and take care. There is still a lot of snow on Glynwood Gardens, so we suggest that you do not attempt to drive onto this road. Staff & visitors should also not attempt to use the car park, but leave their cars on Hill Top or Church Road.

Hawkesbury House Carol Singing from Year 5 and 6

A group of children from all three Year 5 and 6 classes visited Hawkesbury House to sing a selection of traditional carols and some more modern songs to celebrate the festive season. The children sang beautifully, the elderly residents enjoyed the exceptional solo performances and some of our pupils were particularly interested in speaking to the elderly about their 2nd World War experiences following the knowledge they have developed during their topic lessons.

And not forgetting - here come the boys!!!!

Christmas Quiz

The annual Christmas Quiz took place on the final morning of the Autumn term and proved a great success. It was a close run thing going right down to the final round, but eventuallly the Hedgehogs proved victorious despite the children being hindered by the performance of some of the staff on their team! Well done to all those who took part and a big round of applause to the winners.

Sports update

This term has been a bit quieter than normal, partly due to the fact that the leisure centre has been closed and as a result several tournaments and festivals have been put on hold til later this year. We have had basketball and football tournaments this term in which the year 5 and 6 pupils have performed really well and look forward to the forthcoming hockey, netball and multiskills events in the next half term.

It has been an exceedingly busy term in year 5 and 6 as usual. here are some of the highlights of the past few months.
Topics: The major focus for the term was World War II and evidence of the pupils fantastic work can be seen in classrooms and on display in the year 5/6 corridor. The pupils decided which areas of World War II they would like to concentrate on and prodcuced some lovely creative pieces of writing, artwork and technology based on the topic. There was also the obligatory trip to Eden Camp which proved a roaring success and provided the children with lots of ideas and questions for follow up work in the classrooms.
All 3 classes aslo carried put a plant study and leanred about the physiology of plants and how to look and care for them - some more successfully than others! Mr Otterson's class did a short topic on Earth and Space where the pupils prodcued some excellent projects based on the "big questions" they had based on the topic e.g. is there life on other planets? What is a Black Hole? and my personal favourite, Why are there so many things named after chocolate bars in space?
The phase has studied the artwork of several famous painters and artists, had opportunities to develop their cookery skills with Nik the Chef and continued their development of French skills with Mrs Shenton. Add to this the music workshops, Maths breakfast clubs, one to one teaching, electronics project with Emannuelle College and many more activities, it has been an action packed 13 weeks at school!

Supremes at the Shipley

A group of Year 5 and 6 pupils had a very exciting day at the Shipley Art Gallery, viewing the dresses worn by Mary Wilson of the Supremes, designing their own creations and enjoying modelling some fabulous dresses designed by fashion students in the style of the 60's and &70's. Back at school the children copied and designed some ideas of their own which can be seen in the Key Satge 2 corridor.

Just before half term, Mary Wilson, of the Supremes visited school and joined in with our Music Workshop. She was in Gateshead to promote the exhibition of Supremes costumes at the Shipley Art gallery, and was invited by the music service to take part in their Music Workshop. She joined in with some of the activities and sang a solo for us. The children (and many of the adults!) were very excited to have such a special visitor.

Bike Locks and Lights

We have bike locks and bike lights for sale. The locks cost £2.50 and the lights cost £3 for a full set (front and rear). They are a bargain as Bike It can supply them to us at a reduction. They will be sold at the end of each day in the main office.
