Year 5/6 Football Tournament

This Thursday (20th Sep) sees the first year 5/6 football tournament of the 2007/8 season. Ten of our year 5/6 boys and girls will be representing the school at a tournament to be held at Colegate Primary School. The tournament begins at 3.30 and will run to 5.30 approximately. Parents are welcome to come along and support the children and your help would be most appreciated with lifts to the school.

Gymnastic Festival

On Thursday 22nd November Mrs Armstrong took a group of children to the Gymnastic Festival held a Gateshead leisure Centre. The two groups of children were Year 3/4 and Year 5/6. The children each did a floor routine which had some technical gymnastic moves. The children, staff and parents enjoyed the festival.

Basketball Tournament

Year 6 represented the school in the Gateshead schools basketball finals on Tuesday 27th November. They finished in fourth place out of the many Gateshead schools that took part. Well done to our team!

Coaches into school

We are fortunate to have a number of coaches coming into school during this term, including tennis coach Jonathan Newton, who has coached a number of different classes across the school. He is currently working with Mrs Damti's class. Mrs Barnes' and Mrs Walker's class are receiving coaching from the Eagles as part of the Hoops for Health programme, prior to their tournament later this term. Mr Otterson's class have just begun a programme of rugby coaching on a Thursday afternoon - so watch out Jonny Wilkinson!

Glynwood basketball stars play at Arena

After taking part in a Gateshead schools basketball tournament run by The Hoops 4 Health scheme, one of our teams advanced into the final at The Metro Arena last Friday night. They played before the main game between Newcastle Eagles and Scottish Rocks. Although they did not win, this was a great experience for them and they played extremely well. Everyone enjoyed the night, and the Eagles won!

Tennis Coaching

All children will be working with Jonathan Newton, the professional tennis coach at some time this academic year. This half term he is working with Mrs Barnes' and Miss Mason's classes.

Super Athletes

Two of our Year 5/6 pupils represented Joseph Swan feeder schools at an athletics tournament at Gateshead Stadium. They both performed really well, with Chelsey Smith winning the gold medal in her race. Well done!

Year 5/6 Coached by the professionals!

In the last term our children have been receiving professional coaching in their PE lessons in basketball, athletics, rugby, golf and tennis. We feel that the children have benefitted greatly from the expert tuition.

Sports coaching

Several classes are having sports coaching this half term, and having loads of fun learning new sports skills.
Year 5 - cricket, athletics, golf
Year 5/6 - cricket, athletics
Year 6 - girls' football
Year 1/2 - dance
Year 3/4 - basketball
Year 3/4 - funfit
Cricket coaching is through the Chance to Shine initiative, FunFit and basketball are run by our own Mrs Armstrong, the other coaching is provided through the PE Partnership.

Upcoming Sports Tournaments

Teams from Glynwood are taking part in two tournaments in the near future.
22nd May - Year 3/4 striking & fielding at Joseph Swan
12th June - Year 5/6 girls' football at Joseph Swan
We wish both teams every success & hope that they have fun taking part!

Reminder about Sports Day

Just to remind you that it is Early Years and Key Stage One Sports Day on Thursday 3rd July at 9.30 am.
Nursery will have their races first, then can either stay with a grown up or can go home.
Please can we remind you that children need to come to school ready in the morning with their kits and trainers on.
They will also need their water bottles, sun hats and cream, because of course it is going to be a beautiful day!!!
There will be sausage sandwiches for sale, as well as other refreshments, cakes and crisps, So please bring along some pennies.
Programmes will be on sale, but each one will hold a special number.
A winning number will be drawn at the end which will win a prize.
Don't forget too the parents race. We all look forward to it, so get practising. There will be a prize for ladies and mens races too.

Early Years and Key Stage 1 enjoy sports day

On Thursday 3rd July children from Nursery, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 enjoyed their sports day. Children competed in events such as running, sprint and long distance, ball and spoon, obstacle, skipping races, the welly waddle and relay races.

Teachers then joined the 3 legged race. Victory went to Mrs Yielder and Mrs Damti.
Finally everyone enjoyed watching the parents race.

Luckily the sun shone all morning for us and a great time was had by all.

Gateshead Athletics

On the final day in June, 20 pupils attended the annual athletics tournament at Gateshead Stadium. There were a team of 10 year 3 / 4 athletes and 10 year 5 / 6 athletes participating in a range of different events. The Glynwood athletes proved extremely successful winning a host of medals on the day.

Gold medal in the girls relay - Chayse Martin, Gemma Tse, Caitlin Worlidge & Lucy Richardson
Silver medal in the 800m run - Lucy Richardson
Bronze medal in the 60m skipping - Molly Barber

All the children performed exceptionally well and many more pupils missed out on a medal by only one or two places.

Football success!!!!

Fabulous results from both our girls and boys year 5 / 6 football teams,meant that both won their respective leagues this summer. The presentation evening for the boys leagues will take place on Thursday 10th july at Stormont main social club. Well done boys and girls!

Other sports!

Well done to all children who partcipated in the Glynwood games and the various cricket festivals over the past few weeks. There were many successes and all pupils represented their school with the right attitude and tried their best.
